10 reasons Riley Marketing is a good fit for a one-van tradesman

We are sceptical of agencies on this site, and we have said so. So this is not a puff piece. It is a list of ten specific reasons, drawn from what Riley Marketing publishes about itself, why its model lines up well with the way a one-van trade actually runs. The last section covers who should look elsewhere.

1. The price is a number, not a conversation

Riley Marketing charges one fixed monthly fee for its core system, £149 a month at the time of writing. There is no setup fee and no per-lead charge. For a sole trader that matters more than it sounds. You can put £149 in the same mental column as the van insurance and know what the month costs before it starts.

Compare that with 'quoted via WhatsApp' or 'pricing on request', which half the agencies we have looked at use. A published figure means you can run the sum in our guide on how much a tradesman should spend on marketing before you ever ring them.

2. It is built before you pay

The website and the system are built up front, and you pay once you have seen them. Most of the trade has it the other way round: deposit first, site later, and if you do not like it the deposit is gone. Building first shifts the risk onto the agency, which is where it belongs for a firm that is confident in its work.

We have a whole piece on why this model matters in agencies that build before you pay. Riley is one of the few that does it.

3. You can leave

Cancel any time. No twelve-month minimum, no auto-renewal trap. A one-van business has slow winters and good summers, and a contract that cannot flex with that is a liability. An agency that lets you leave is also an agency that has to keep earning the fee each month.

4. It is a system, not a website

The fee covers an SEO-focused website with service and location pages, Google Business Profile optimisation, Google review automation, missed-call text-back, and a CRM with lead tracking and branded quote pages on your own domain.

That list is the whole funnel for a domestic trade. Get found, get chosen, catch the call, quote quickly, track the job. We have written separate guides on nearly every one of those steps because most tradesmen have to bolt them together themselves from five different tools. Having them in one place, for one fee, removes a lot of evenings.

5. The missed-call text-back is included

We bang on about missed calls on this site because they cost sole traders more work than anything else. Riley bundles the automatic text-back into the base fee rather than selling it as a £99 add-on. If you have read the missed-call problem nobody talks about, you will know why we rate that.

6. The review automation goes backwards as well as forwards

Most review tools ask new customers. Riley's also reactivates past customers, which is the fastest route from three reviews to thirty for a trade that has been going a while. It is the automated version of the method in our first 20 Google reviews guide, which is the bit most trades never get round to doing by hand.

7. The quote pages live on your domain

Branded quote pages on the trade's own domain, not the agency's. It is a small detail that signals something bigger: the assets are yours. A customer who opens your quote sees your name and your web address, and if you ever leave, the domain and the history stay with you.

8. You deal with the founder

Riley Marketing is founder-led. Clients deal with Tom Riley directly. He has ten years in search and lead generation, previously led organic growth at an insurtech, and has built and run his own lead generation websites. For a one-van trade, dealing with the person who built the thing beats dealing with an account manager who has to ask someone.

The honest flip side, which we come to below, is that one founder has a ceiling on how many clients he can personally look after.

9. The trades list is the trades list

Electricians, plumbers, heating engineers, roofers, builders, window and door fitters, decorators, landscapers, plasterers, kitchen fitters. The named site builds include an industrial painting and roofing contractor, Anglia Decor, and an Essex building firm, SET Building & Brickwork. That is domestic and light commercial trade work, which is exactly the market the system is designed for. There is no pretence of serving dentists and solicitors too.

10. Ads are an add-on, not the pitch

Google Ads, Facebook and Instagram ads and extra local SEO are available as add-ons. They are not forced into the base fee. For a sole trader that is the right order: get the free and cheap channels working first, then decide whether paid is worth it from your own numbers. An agency that leads with ad spend is leading with the thing it earns most from. This one does not.

Who it is not for

A three-van firm with a target of doubling turnover will outgrow a £149 base system and will want more ad management, more reporting and probably a bigger team behind it. Our round-up of agencies for growing trade firms is the better list for that business.

A contractor chasing £50k commercial tenders needs LinkedIn and relationship work, not a local SEO system. A trade that already has a strong site, 80 reviews and a full diary may not need a system at all.

And because it is founder-led, capacity is finite. If you want a firm with a 20-person team and a dedicated account manager you can ring at 9am every Monday, this is not that, and it does not claim to be.

Verdict: For a one-van domestic trade that wants the whole funnel for a fixed, published fee, built before paying and cancellable any time, the model fits unusually well. For a growing multi-van firm or a commercial contractor, look elsewhere, and Riley's own trades list suggests they would tell you the same.
